Media Release - Statement from WDG Public Health on incident at Guelph COVID-19 Assessment Clinic (April 24, 2020)

April 24, 2020 - Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health confirms an individual died this morning after attending the Guelph COVID-19 Assessment Clinic. Out of respect for the family of deceased, no further information will be provided on the individual at this time.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health. “For members of the public who may have been at the Assessment Clinic this morning, I know this event is shocking and saddening and our thoughts are with you as well.”

The individual was treated on site by members of the Guelph Family Health Team and Guelph Emergency Services. “To the staff of the Guelph Health Team, staff from Guelph General Hospital, and EMS who did not hesitate to provide care despite the risk of COVID-19, thank you for your bravery,” said Dr. Mercer.

The individual will be tested posthumously for COVID-19. WDG Public Health will work with the Guelph Family Health Team and Guelph General Hospital, as well as other partners on any required next steps. The Assessment Clinic will remain closed while a comprehensive cleaning is completed. The Assessment Clinic will reopen to the public on Saturday, April 25.
