Media Release: Wellington County COVID-19 Hub Vaccination Clinic opens Friday, February 19, 2021

February 18, 2021

February 18, 2021 – On February 19, 2021, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, the County of Wellington and the Township of Centre Wellington will open a COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic in Fergus. Located at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex, this clinic will be a crucial component of the region’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy.

“I want to extend my sincere thanks to the residents, staff and municipal leaders of Centre Wellington and Wellington County,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of WDG Public Health. “Without the commitment of staffing, personnel and resources by the County and the Township, this clinic would not be possible.”

“From the offset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the County and its member municipalities made a commitment to listen to the medical and data driven advice of our Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Nicola Mercer, and to support Wellington –Dufferin-Guelph Public Health in any way possible to expedite the vaccine distribution to our residents,” said County Warden and Centre Wellington Mayor, Kelly Linton.

Mayor Linton added, “Tomorrow, the Wellington County COVID-19 Hub Vaccination Clinic opens at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus. Staff from the County, Township of Centre Wellington and Public Health are working around the clock as a single team to provide a safe central location for this important initiative. Getting all of us vaccinated is what will finally end this pandemic.”

The Sportsplex is an ideal location for a mass immunization clinic as it combines multiple large indoor spaces with accessibility and excellent parking. The clinic will begin with a capacity of 500 doses per day with the ability to scale up to 5,000 doses per day once vaccine supply increases. In addition to the Sportsplex location, Public Health is completing plans to provide mobile clinics in Wellington County to reach all areas of the county.

To begin, the Sportsplex location will focus on vaccinations for high-risk groups as directed by The Province’s Ethical Framework for Vaccine Distribution. As vaccine supply expands, the Sportsplex location will transition to vaccinations for the broader public.

“The clinic in Centre Wellington is a vital part of our regional vaccination plan,” said Dr. Mercer. “Our partnership with the County and the Township will ensure that residents are vaccinated quickly and as close to home as possible so that together we can bring an end to this pandemic.”
