Public Health is advising women about a recall of the birth control pill Alysena 28. This oral contraceptive is the generic form of Alesse. If you have been prescribed Alesse at a Public Health clinic, you are urged to contact your pharmacist or call us at 1-800-265-7293.

The oral contraceptive package may not contain the correct number of active contraceptive tablets (21) and placebo tablets (7). Some product lots of Alysena 28 may contain twice as many placebo (sugar) tablets. There is a potential risk of unplanned pregnancy. It is important for any woman who uses birth control to find out if she is affected by this recall.

Public Health recommends that all women using this brand of birth control, use a non-hormonal method of contraception, such as condoms, until they obtain medical advice. If suspect pregnancy or wish free condoms, please visit one of our clinic sites.

The recall is in effect in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
